A new campaign was announced in Sosua on Friday afternoon. We translated the official announcement and posted it at the bottom of this article.
Many local politicians, top police officers, military officials and the Attorney General of the Republic came in for the official campaign launch on Friday afternoon. The campaign is centered on reducing prostitution downtown and making Sosua a tourist friendly destination. The rumor mill has been churning ever since the police stepped up policing efforts downtown last month. Many wondered how long the latest crackdown would last. This seems to answer that question. .
The short term harm to local businesses centered downtown along Pedro Clisante cannot be understated. Daytime and early evening foot traffic is almost nonexistent on the strip these days. Many hotels and rental agents are reporting mass cancelations as that segment of our “tourism” industry reconsiders Sosua for their “vacation” destination. Many seem to be opting for Columbia and Costa Rica for their next “vacations”.
In our opinion the long term effects of Sosua actually becoming a family friendly tourist destination would be tremendous. Far more businesses would thrive under a family friendly atmosphere than those impacted by the loss of the daytime monger traffic. Next lets work on getting some additional flights into POP and some international marketing for Sosua and Cabarete. #Rescatemosnuestroparaíso
